We’ve all experienced that moment of dread after accidentally nudging a glass of wine or spilling some food down ourselves. We hold our breaths and tentatively look down to discover a huge unsightly stain on the carpet. In a flurry of panic, you grab anything you think might help. Towels, tissues, sprays, soaps- anything to lift the stain as quickly as possible. However, it sometimes pays to step back and take a moment. Nobody wants their pristine cream carpet to look dirty or unkept, but with so many ludicrous carpet cleaning myths out there, how are you to know what will actually help?
Here at Chem Supplies: Professional Carpet & Upholstery Cleaners, we firmly believe that when it comes to treating tough stains at home, less is more. With this in mind, we’ve come up with five simple yet effective tips for lifting stubborn carpet stains.
Dab with a tissue, wipe with a cloth
After a big spillage, it can be tempting to grab the nearest piece of material to you to try and scrub away your stain. However, this is not always the best solution. If you have spilled a drink, it’s important to blot the stain with a tissue or paper towel first and foremost. Scrubbing the mark with a sponge straight away could cause it to spread, so it’s imperative to soak up the excess liquid first. Do not try to rub the tissue across the stain as it is likely to disintegrate and get stuck between the carpet follicles. When it comes to stains, remember to blot with paper before wiping with a cloth or sponge.
Work from the outside in
Our instincts tell us to scrub furiously at a stain until it disappears, but this is not advisable. It’s much better to tackle a stain from the outside and then work your way in to prevent it from spreading across the carpet.
Home remedies
While there are so many false claims out there regarding the removal of stains, there are a few home remedies that can be quite effective. For example, sprinkling a thick layer of salt over a red wine spillage can really help lift the stain. We wouldn’t necessarily suggest trusting everything you read on the internet about stain solutions, but perhaps you could speak to a trusted friend or neighbour? Find out what has worked for them in the past and give it a go!
Scrape hard stains with a blunt knife
Sometimes, we don’t discover stains until a few hours after the event, by which time substances such as chocolate may have hardened. If this is the case, scraping away at your solidified stain is a great way to make it less obvious. After this, you can clean it with a damp cloth and it’ll be as though it never happened!
Hire a professional
If you’ve got an unsightly stain that just won’t budge, it may be time to call in the big guns. No matter the gravity of your stain, a professional carpet cleaner will likely have the perfect remedy to remove it. Flooring is an extremely important part of a household, so why not go that extra mile to make your carpet look brand new again?
